How Much Does Micro Cement Cost in Malta? Cost Factors Explained

Why micro cement quotes in Malta vary so much, and what really drives the price: substrate, area, detailing, waterproofing and finish.

How Much Does Micro Cement Cost in Malta? Cost Factors Explained – Shaw Contractors, Malta

"How much per square metre?" is usually the first question people ask about micro cement in Malta. It is a fair question, but it is also the reason so many quotes look impossible to compare. Two contractors can price the same bathroom very differently, and both may be right, depending on what they have included.

This article explains what goes into the price, so you can understand your quote and avoid surprises.

Why there is no single price

Micro cement is a hand-applied, multi-layer system. The material is only part of the cost; most of it is skilled labour and time. That time varies enormously depending on the condition of what is underneath, how much detail work is involved and what finish you choose.

As a very rough orientation, micro cement in Malta is typically priced per square metre for straightforward floor areas, and rates can vary widely depending on the factors below. Small, detailed areas such as showers, niches, steps and vanity tops are often priced differently, or quoted as a lump sum, because they take far longer per square metre. The real figure always depends on your site, which is why we always recommend a site visit and a written quote.

The main cost drivers

1. Substrate condition and preparation

This is the biggest variable. Micro cement is only as good as what it sits on.

  • Sound, level screed or plaster: minimal preparation.
  • Existing tiles: need checking for hollow spots, cleaning, degreasing and priming. Grout lines may need filling.
  • Cracked or uneven floors: may need repairs, new concrete screed or a self-levelling compound first.
  • Damp: any moisture problem must be resolved before applying a finish. This can add significant cost and time, and is common in older Maltese limestone buildings and ground-floor properties.

2. Area and layout

Large, open floor areas are usually more efficient per square metre than small rooms. A compact bathroom with a shower, niches, a bench and window reveals involves a lot of edges and corners, each of which must be trowelled and finished by hand.

3. Walls versus floors

Floors are often quicker to apply than walls, but floors also need a more durable system and sealer. Walls involve more edges, corners and junctions. Both have their own cost profile.

4. Wet areas and waterproofing

Shower areas need a waterproof membrane underneath, with sealed corners, drains and pipe penetrations. This is a separate step with its own materials and labour. A quote without waterproofing in a shower is not comparing like with like.

5. Detailing

Items that add time:

  • Steps and stair nosings
  • Shower niches and benches
  • Vanity tops and kitchen worktops
  • Window sills and reveals
  • Curved walls and arches
  • Joins with other materials (skirting, thresholds, door frames)

6. Product system and finish

Different micro cement systems vary in price. Finishes also differ: some textures need more coats or more careful trowelling. Special colours, metallic effects or very smooth, polished looks take longer.

7. Sealer type and number of coats

The sealer protects the surface. Floors and wet areas generally need a tougher sealer and more coats than a feature wall. Anti-slip additives for floors also add a little.

8. Access and logistics

Upper-floor apartments without lifts, narrow streets, limited parking and occupied homes all affect how long a job takes. Working around furniture or other trades also has a cost.

9. Timing and weather

Malta's climate affects curing. In high summer, coats can flash-dry and need careful management; in the rainy season from October to February, humidity slows drying. Neither changes the price dramatically on its own, but it affects programme length on bigger jobs.

What should a good quote include?

When comparing quotes, check that each one clearly states:

  • Area measured (floor and walls separately)
  • Substrate preparation and repairs
  • Priming and any reinforcement mesh
  • Waterproofing in wet zones
  • Number of base and finishing coats
  • Sealer type and number of coats
  • Detail items (niches, steps, tops)
  • Protection of adjoining surfaces and clean-up
  • Who removes old finishes, if needed

If one quote is much lower than the others, it often leaves out preparation, waterproofing or sealer coats. Those are the very things that decide whether the finish lasts.

Micro cement vs tiles on cost

People often ask whether micro cement is cheaper than tiles. It depends. Very cheap tiles laid simply on a good screed can cost less. On the other hand, micro cement can sometimes go over existing tiles, saving on demolition, disposal and new screed. Large-format porcelain with a premium laying service is a closer comparison. Weigh up the look you want, the maintenance you are comfortable with and the condition of the existing surfaces. Our tiling team can price both options side by side.

Ways to keep the cost under control

  • Decide on the scope early. Adding walls or niches midway costs more than planning them.
  • Fix the substrate properly once. Cutting corners here costs more later.
  • Keep detailing purposeful. Every niche and step adds labour.
  • Combine trades. If you are also doing screed, plastering or underfloor heating, having one contractor manage the sequence avoids delays and re-work.
  • Look after it. Correct cleaning and timely resealing extend the life of the finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give me a price per square metre over the phone?

We can give a broad idea, but the real figure depends on the substrate, the details and the finish. A free site visit gives you an accurate written quote.

Is applying over existing tiles always cheaper?

Often, because it avoids demolition. But if the tiles are hollow or uneven, removal and re-screeding may be needed anyway.

Does the price include sealing?

It should. Always check the number and type of sealer coats on your quote.

Are there ongoing costs?

The sealer will eventually need a maintenance coat, depending on use. Factor this into your long-term budget.
