When dividing up a space in Malta — whether adding a new room, splitting an open-plan area, or reconfiguring an office — gypsum board partitions are usually the go-to solution over traditional block walls. Here’s what’s involved and what to consider.

Gypsum Board Partitions

  • Fast to build: a metal stud frame boarded with gypsum plasterboard goes up far faster than traditional block walls
  • Lightweight: puts less load on the structure than masonry, useful for upper floors or non-structural reconfigurations
  • Easy to run services through: electrical and data cabling can be run within the stud cavity before boarding
  • Good soundproofing when detailed correctly: double-boarding and acoustic insulation batts inside the cavity significantly reduce sound transmission between rooms
  • Simple to modify later: easier to alter or remove than a block wall if your layout needs change

Traditional Block Partitions

  • More structural mass: better inherent sound and fire resistance without additional detailing
  • Slower to build and generates more site mess and waste
  • Harder to alter once built — demolition is more disruptive
  • Heavier: not always suitable for upper floors without structural review

Soundproofing: Getting It Right

A common misconception is that gypsum partitions are inherently worse for sound than block. In practice, a well-detailed double-boarded gypsum partition with acoustic insulation batts can perform very well — the key is getting the detailing right, not the base material choice.

Which Should You Choose?

For most internal reconfigurations, room additions and commercial fit-outs in Malta, gypsum partitions offer the best balance of speed, cost and flexibility. Block remains the better choice for structural walls or situations needing maximum fire and sound resistance without extra detailing.
