One of the biggest advantages of microcement is how little maintenance it needs compared to tiled or grouted surfaces — but “low maintenance” isn’t “no maintenance.” A little regular care goes a long way toward keeping a microcement finish looking new for years.

Daily and Weekly Care

  • Sweep or vacuum loose dirt and grit before it gets ground into the surface
  • Clean with a soft mop or cloth and warm water, or a pH-neutral cleaner
  • Avoid abrasive scourers, steel wool, or anything that could scratch the sealed surface
  • Wipe up spills promptly, especially anything acidic (vinegar, citrus, wine)

What to Avoid

  • Harsh chemical cleaners: bleach, ammonia and acidic cleaning products can damage the sealer over time
  • Standing water: pooled water left for extended periods can affect the sealer, particularly in bathrooms
  • Dragging heavy furniture: use protective pads under furniture legs to avoid scuffing the surface
  • Skipping resealing: the sealer is what protects microcement from stains and water — letting it wear down without reapplying leaves the surface vulnerable

Resealing: The Key to Long-Term Durability

Microcement’s protective sealer wears down gradually with foot traffic, cleaning and general use. Depending on the area and how it’s used, resealing every 1-3 years keeps the surface protected against stains, scratches and water damage. High-traffic areas and wet rooms typically need resealing more often than low-traffic walls or feature surfaces.

Dealing With Minor Damage

Small scratches or wear patches in microcement can often be spot-repaired and resealed, rather than requiring the whole surface to be redone — one of the practical advantages over tiling, where a cracked tile needs to be replaced entirely.
